Folger heads opening Mugello practice

Jonas Folger topped Moto3™ practice as track action commenced for the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM on Friday morning. The Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3 rider led championship leader Maverick Viñales and wildcard rider Andrea Locatelli.

No rain fell during the session, but the track was slightly damp following the heavy showers of Thursday. Folger set the pace with a last-minute lap of 2’09.450, denying Mahindra Racing’s Locatelli of the top spot on his debut. The Italian then fell to third as Team Calvo’s Viñales went second to Folger, two tenths slower.
Alex Rins (Estrella Galicia 0,0) and Jack Miller (Caretta Technology – RTG) completed the top five from the second Mahindra of Romano Fenati, whereas returning teammate Efren Vazquez elected not to run on the moist surface in a bid to avoid a slip-up and possible further injury to his damaged collarbone.
Other Mahindra rider Miguel Oliveira ended the 40 minutes in seventh position from Luis Salom (Red Bull KTM Ajo), Isaac Viñales (cousin of Maverick, riding for Ognetta-Centro Seta) and Zulfahmi Khairuddin (Red Bull KTM Ajo). Back on-track after his Le Mans crash, Danny Webb (Ambrogio Racing) ended the period in 18th spot. Redox RW Racing GP’s Jakub Kornfeil completed only four laps and will not take part in second practice due to a case of labyrinthitis, an inner ear complaint.
The second Moto3™ practice session starts at 1:10pm local time (GMT +2).
