Lorenzo striving for home GP victory
Jorge Lorenzo hopes to follow in the footsteps of Dani Pedrosa by achieving a second consecutive Grand Prix victory as MotoGP™ heads to Barcelona this weekend.
Thanks to his second win of 2013 last time out in Italy, the Yamaha Factory Racing rider and reigning world champion has jumped up to second position in the championship and moved to within 12 points of Repsol Honda Team’s Pedrosa.
"I’m quite satisfied after our great result at Mugello that completed an almost perfect weekend," Lorenzo says on Tuesday.
"Winning again was very positive for me and for the team and we now go to Montmelo and my home Grand Prix. Some parts of the track are quite suitable for us but the doubt is always if the track conditions and the temperature can benefit us.
"I am very optimistic for the race and we will keep on working on the bike in the same way that we did in Italy. Compared with Mugello, Montmelo is a little bit slower, but at least there are no first gear corners and hopefully that will help us a lot. This is a good track for us and we have to profit from it and try to repeat the victory.
"It could be great for the championship. As far as I’m concerned, I will push 100% to achieve it."
Lorenzo has triumphed twice at the Circuit de Catalunya over the past three years, having won his home event in his title-winning seasons of 2010 and 2012.

Moto3: Zulfahmi Khairuddin - Q&A
A Red Bull KTM Ajo generated interview with Malaysian Moto3 star Zulfahmi Khairuddin...
Q:
Do you like the travel involved in Grand Prix racing? Do you get a chance to familiarise yourself with the places you go to?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"The truth is that during the season we don't have much time to get away. At most you have a day to see the city where a GP is held sometimes, but that's not the norm. You get used to spending all day at the circuit. It is a pity, because I really like to visit new countries, try their typical food and meet people from around the world."

Q:
You spent a year in Europe in 2010. What was that experience like and why did you choose to go back to Malaysia?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"The experience of 2010, living in Italy, was very good and important for me. It was my first year in Europe and I didn't know many people, nor was I familiar with the food - very important! - or the weather. It was a little difficult, especially during the first three months, because I was not used to everything around me.
“I especially struggled with the cold and the food. After the first few months I got used to it and finally I felt good and learned a lot from the people around me.
“For the past two years I have lived in Malaysia. It's better for me to live there because I like to go home, to see my family and my friends. Moreover, the weather in Malaysia is always good. As is normal, I guess, there is nowhere else where I feel so comfortable."
Q:
And if you had to spend time away from Malaysia, where would you like to go?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"In Barcelona, which is a city that I like a lot. Many of my team members live there and I love it."
Q:
Many of your team members are Spanish and a big part of your preseason is spent in Spain. What do you like about the country?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"The beach, the city [Barcelona], the people... This country has many good circuits and racing is very popular here."
Q:
Is it true that you can sleep very easily on things like plane journeys?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"It's true; I have the ability to sleep anytime, anywhere. I need only five minutes to fall asleep! Last year, noticing this, the team gave me a cushion!"
Q:
More and more Malaysians are becoming MotoGP fans every year. Do you think we will see more Malaysian riders in the World Championship in the future?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"I hope so, but it is difficult to find riders who can make the leap up, because there is so much talent at World Championship level. Nevertheless, I think that the Sepang Circuit and the people involved there are doing a very good job. In my country there are some very talented riders."
Q:
Last year you took your first podium at Sepang. What do you remember about that?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"It was a Grand Prix that I will never forget: My first podium in Moto3! I felt bad about not being able to win in front of all the fans, but the experience helped and next time I will shut the door tighter on the last corner."
Q:
Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"I don't know; for me to be in the World Championship is already a dream come true. Few riders know what they will be doing in five years' time. I would like to be able to one day ride in MotoGP. It is very difficult but I will work hard for it."
Q:
Final question: If you weren't a rider, what would you have liked to have been?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"Something to do with bikes, as I love this world. So I would have liked to be a mechanic or engineer."

Spaniards chase the English into Barcelona
Britain’s Scott Redding has won the last pair of Moto2™ races and carries a healthy championship lead into Round 6 at Barcelona. Behind him, a pack of charging Spaniards – as well as Finland’s Mika Kallio – are now hot on the heels of the Marc VDS Racing Team rider ahead of what is, for many of them, a true home race.
Curiously, although Redding may hold the smallest amount of points of any of the current leaders across the three categories of the World Championship (with 101 to Dani Pedrosa’s 103 in MotoGP™ or Maverick Viñales 106 in Moto3™), he convincingly holds the greatest advantage thanks to a 43-point cushion. With ‘only’ 25 on offer for a race win, this demonstrates the pressure on the shoulders of rivals.
Redding’s strong lead has come about as a combination of his steadiness coupled with the inconsistency of his closest opponents. Whereas he has achieved two wins, two second places and one fifth, Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2’s Nico Terol and Redding’s teammate Mika Kallio have enjoyed only two rostrums apiece, whereas Tuenti HP 40 pairing Esteve Rabat and Pol Espargaro have both won races but also been outside the top ten on two occasions each. Technomag carXpert’s Dominique Aegerter, who is sixth in the standings and the final rider to have notched up half a century of points, is yet to finish inside the top three but has collected a trio of fourth place finishes.
A key part of the upcoming weekend has in fact already happened, as Moto2™ enjoyed a single day of post-race testing after the last Grand Prix at Mugello. This was especially key for the likes of pre-season title favourite Espargaro, who after the last race openly admitted that he and his squad were in need of bike improvements in order to get back on par with Redding. Qualifying will bring the first real answers.
Two wildcard entrants are set to join the action this weekend, as Petronas Raceline Malaysia’s Hafizh Syahrin and TSR Motorsport’s Dani Rivas take to the track. The sun is expected to shine, although Barcelona weather has been changeable of late…

Wildcard Kedua Hafizh Di Catalunya

Viñales quickest in Mugello test session
Following a single day of post-race Mugello testing for Moto2™, it was the turn of the Moto3™ field on Tuesday as championship leader Maverick Viñales led the way.
The positive news in the morning was sunshine at the picturesque Tuscan venue, after the previous day had brought several rainstorms. Tuesday would not be all-dry either, as a shower did come at 2pm, although the race track soon dried out.
Both Viñales’ Team Calvo outfit and Estrella Galicia 0,0 - both running KTM machinery - concentrated on bike setup as Red Bull KTM Ajo divided the workload amongst its riders; Luis Salom and Zulfahmi Khairuddin carried out back-to-back comparisons between the current chassis and an updated version, also delving into suspension settings and various engine maps. Also on an Austrian-made KTM bike, Avant Tecno’s Niklas Ajo focussed primarily on the geometry of his frame.
At Mahindra Racing, the team remained on a high after Miguel Oliveira had achieved the outfit’s best ever fourth place finish in the race 48 hours earlier. Today’s plan featured a raft of components ranging from aerodynamic upgrades to the frame and engine to suspension. Oliveira’s injured teammate Efren Vazquez remained on the sidelines and was covered for by Italian Michael Rinaldi.
GO&FUN Gresini Moto3 concentrated on engine updates, brought by the team itself as opposed to Honda, as team owner Fausto Gresini confirmed that the objective was to find more horsepower. Also powered by Honda but with an FTR chassis, San Carlo Team Italia experimented with a new swingarm. Red flags would fleetingly break up the day, with Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins and La Fonte Tascaracing’s Hyuga Watanabe (assessing chassis enhancements) amongst the fallers; the latter was momentarily knocked unconscious and taken to hospital for check-ups, but was allowed to leave in the evening and is expected to be fit to take part in the next race.
Some in the paddock were surprised to see Belgian rookie Livio Loi, who had not been set to run but elected to look into setup changes on his Marc VDS Racing Team bike in a bid to improve confidence levels after a difficult race on Sunday. CIP Moto3’s Juanfran Guevara - testing new rear shock absorbers and electronics - suffered a pair of crashes within four hours of each other, whereas frame geometry was top priority for Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger and Eric Granado.
On the timesheets, Folger and Viñales traded top times for much of the test (running from 9am-6pm local time, GMT+2) until the latter posted his final leading best of 1’57.889 in the penultimate hour.

MotoGP: Max Biaggi To Test Ben Spies’s Ducati at Mugello, Michele Pirro To Replace Spies at Barcelona
Max Biaggi is to make a surprise return to riding a MotoGP machine. The former 250 and World Superbike champion will take a seat on Ben Spies’ Ignite Pramac Ducati as part of a one-day test at Mugello, as part of Ducati’s testing program, according to Italian site GPOne.
Spies was scheduled to stay on at Mugello to take part in a two-day test, but after the first day of practice at last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, it was clear to both Spies and Ducati that his shoulder was still too weak to ride a MotoGP machine. With work continuing on the Desmosedici, it was important for Ducati to get as much data as possible on their bike, and so Biaggi was offered the chance to ride the machine.
The test, Ducati team boss Paolo Ciabatti told GPOne, is just an opportunity for Biaggi to enjoy himself, and to provide some feedback on the bike. Not much is expected of it, as Biaggi has not ridden a MotoGP machine since 2005, when an ill-tempered split with Honda saw him forced to leave the MotoGP paddock.
Biaggi has never ridden a Bridgestone MotoGP tire which, though much improved, are still tricky to learn. And electronic controls have come on in leaps and bounds since then, though the electronics Biaggi used at the factory Aprilia team in World Superbikes last year were at a standard very close to those in MotoGP.
Biaggi will join factory riders Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso on track on Thursday, with the factory men due to stay on for another day after that. Up for testing will be the latest iteration of the lab bike, which features further improvements over the Desmosedici GP13, mainly in the area of chassis stiffness.
When we asked team coordinator Vitto Guareschi when the race version of the lab bike would make its debut at a race, Guareschi replied that no decision had been made yet. “When we know the new bike is ready, we will race it,” he said.
The lesson had been learned in the past two years, when Ducati had rushed to introduce too many new parts at race weekends without thoroughly testing them beforehand. “In the past, we introduced too many things, now we wait until it’s ready,” Guareschi explained.
Biaggi’s test however does not mean that he is a candidate to replace the injured Ben Spies in the upcoming races, Ciabatti told GPOne. For the Barcelona race, Michele Pirro will step in for Spies once again, though this time, he will ride with the lab bike, rather than Spies’ standard GP13.
The engine of the lab bike has the same basic dimensions as the standard GP13, and so Pirro will be able to use the lab bike without disrupting Spies’ engine allocation. Ducati had been hesitant to have Pirro race on the standard bike, as Pirro is such a crucial part of Ducati’s testing plan, and their MotoGP project, Vitto Guareschi told us on Sunday. They feared that the project could suffer severe delays if Pirro was injured in a crash.

Lorenzo celebrates second win of 2013
Jorge Lorenzo’s third successive victory at Mugello was his second of the season and raises the World Champion to second place in the Riders’ Championship.
The Yamaha Factory Racing rider started second but took immediate advantage of a mistake by pole-sitter Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team), who ran wide at Turn 1.
“I knew it was going to be a really hard race because it got much hotter than it had been in the morning,” the Mallorcan said after the race. “In the morning we were quite fast; we were also fast in the afternoon, but not the same – three or four tenths slower.
“Dani was following me for about 13 laps, but on the 13th I pushed a little bit more – to be about three tenths faster - and it seems he gave up a little bit, so it was much easier from then.”
Heading to Round 6 in Barcelona, Lorenzo has moved to within 12 points of Pedrosa atop the standings, jumping Honda’s Marc Marquez who crashed at Mugello on Sunday.
Back-to-back victories as Redding wins in Italy
Scott Redding has become the first British rider to win successive races in the intermediate class since 1971, taking the Moto2™ chequered flag at Mugello on Sunday. The Marc VDS Racing Team rider extends his championship lead to 43 points over second-placed finisher Nico Terol, as Johann Zarco completed the podium.
On Saturday, Redding – who won his first Moto2 race last time out in France – celebrated pole position, starting in front of Japan’s Takaaki Nakagami as Germany’s Marcel Schrotter placed himself on the front row for the first time.
Nakagami took the lead off the start line, but a decisive move from Redding saw the Gloucestershire rider slide through at Poggio Seco on the fourth lap. Nakagami, struggling under braking, immediately began to drop back and crashed out of the race at Scarperia on Lap 9 – this marked his second fall in as many Grands Prix.
As Redding began to stretch out a healthy advantage over Terol (Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2) and Zarco (Came Iodaracing Project), Tuenti HP 40’s Pol Espargaro set about the task of damage limitation. From tenth on the grid, the pre-season title favourite made significant progress in the second half of the race; aided by contact between Alex de Angelis and Xavier Simeon which put the Belgian out, Espargaro stole his final position of fourth from Mika Kallio just two laps from home.
Marc VDS’ Kallio would round out the top five, leading home Aspar’s Jordi Torres after an entertaining duel. Seventh-placed Simone Corsi (NGM Mobile Racing) was the leading Italian rider from aforementioned teammate de Angelis, as Tom Luthi and Dominique Aegerter ended quiet weekends in the final two top ten positions for Interwetten Paddock Moto2 Racing and Technomag carXpert, respectively.
Schrotter would finish 12th from third on the grid, whereas Tuenti’s Esteve Rabat – who had been the championship leader after Jerez – made a mistake and finished 13th. Six riders did not make the finish, including Indonesian duo Rafid Topan Sucipto and Doni Tata Pradita as the former fell and collected the latter at the first corner.
Redding’s success, making his the first consecutive middle class race winner from Britain since Rodney Gould 42 years ago, allows him to take a comfortable championship advantage into the Gran Premio Aperol de Catalunya on 16th June.
Salom triumphs in intense fight at Mugello
Luis Salom has claimed his second Moto3™ win of 2013 following a multiple-rider battle for victory in the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider pulled out a small advantage on the final lap to lead home Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins and Team Calvo’s Maverick Viñales, who retains his championship lead.
Saturday had seen Germany’s Jonas Folger take his first pole position of the season, heading up the front row from Viñales who looked to complete a hat-trick of Moto3 race wins. Consistent Salom, the eventual winner, would come from fifth on the grid. Having won the season-opening Qatar GP, he was yet to finish off the podium this year and has therefore maintained his impressive run of form. He went third on the opening lap and, with a handful to go, could be seen making the most of his KTM power to pull in front of the pack on the start/finish straight.
The crucial moment came three laps from home, as Rins’ teammate Alex Marquez allowed Salom to pull out enough of a gap to hold the advantage by the time Rins and Viñales rejoined the top three group. Rins, having bogged down slightly at the start, was nonetheless delighted with second place from third on the grid. Viñales led at half distance, having dispatched with Folger on Lap 4 before heading up a thrilling lead group of six riders. Behind, another multi-rider cluster was contesting positions eight and downwards and on several occasions up to six men could be seen riding side-by-side on the drag down to first corner San Donato.
Oliveira celebrated his best result of the season so far to finish fourth for Mahindra Racing from Marquez, both of whom enjoyed sizeable amounts of time in the lead – from tenth on the grid, in the case of the latter. Folger could not climb back to the front of the lead pack, finishing sixth from pole position. The top ten was completed by GO&FUN Gresini Moto3’s Niccolo Antonelli, Avant Tecno’s Niklas Ajo (who pulled off an impressive overtaking manoeuvre during the race), Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3 newcomer Eric Granado and Caretta Technology – RTG’s Jack Miller.
Salom’s fourth career win sees him move to within four points of Viñales atop the championship (106 points to 102), with Rins third on 81 but still paying the price of his crash in the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez. Five riders failed to make the finish of today’s race, including Romano Fenati who flew over the front of his San Carlo Team Italia bike following contact with Jasper Iwema (RW Racing GP), while Jakub Kornfeil (Redox RW Racing GP) and Matteo Ferrari (Ongetta-Centro Seta) were left highly frustrated to have ended up in the gravel trap of the final corner on the last lap.
Moto3™ continues with the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya in a fortnight’s time.
