AZLAN, ZAMRI: ONE EACH AT SENTUL

Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Mohd Zamri Baba were both winners at Round 2 of the 2013 PETRONAS Asia Road Racing Championship which took place at the Sentul International Circuit on May 19, 2013. Both Malaysian riders picked up a win a piece from Race 1 and Race 2 respectively.
In Race 1, polesitter Azlan stole the holeshot but immediately came under pressure from Zamri and M. Fadli Immammuddin. The three riders were neck-to-neck for the first half of the 16-lap race. Zamri took the lead on Lap 5 before giving way to Fadli on Lap 6. Azlan fought back to take the front on Lap 7 but again lost out to Fadli who hung on to P1 from Laps 8 to 10. Behind the three riders, Katsuaki Fujiwara tried to break through but repeatedly found himself forced back into P4. Azlan finally managed to gain a hold on P1 on Lap 11, and sustained his pace all the way through to the finish line to take his second win of the season with 24:21.773s.

Zamri Baba cruised home in second place with 24:23.264s while M. Fadli delighted his home crowd with a third place finish after he stopped the clock at 24:25.344s.

In Race 2, Fadli looked even more determined than ever as he challenged Azlan for the lead in the first four laps of the race. In his zeal to solidify his position, Fadli ran wide on Lap 4, slowing the group down, and allowing Fujiwara a window of opportunity to join the front group. Azlan and Zamri also took the chance to ride up to the front of the pack with Azlan leading for the duration of the 16-lap race.

Just as Azlan was looking set to win Race 2, Zamri Baba shocked Azlan when he dove in beside Azlan at the last corner and carried the momentum right through to the finish line. Zamri won with a total time of 24:21.910s, 0.278s ahead of Azlan who finished second with 24:22.188s. Fadli was again third with 24:22.712s. Makoto Tamada placed fourth with 24:28.862s while Fujiwara who was suffering from a gearbox malfunction, finished fifth with 24:30.335.

"Throughout the race, I felt that Azlan was riding a bit strangely. His lines were a bit wide and when I saw a window of opportunity in the last lap, I simply gunned for it," said a delighted Zamri.

The tie between Azlan and Fujiwara at the top of the SuperSports 600cc standings is now effectively broken with Azlan leading by 90 points. Fujiwara is second overall with 69 points and Zamri third with 61 points.

AZLAN PULLS A FAST ONE

The daunting track surface at the Sentul International Circuit has done little to hamper Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman's determination as the Malaysian rider pulls yet another lap record out of the bag during the SuperSports 600cc qualifying practice.
A light rain shower in the Underbone 115cc qualifying left the SuperSports 600cc riders with a damp track to contend with. The riders from the host nation were the first to dominate the session with M. Fadli, Dimas Ekky Pratama and Denny Triyugo lapping quickest on the wet track. But within a few minutes, Azlan and Zamri Baba were beginning to make their presence felt. Makoto Inagaki, Ahmad Fuad Baharudin and Katsuaki Fujiwara were also among the riders who popped up at the top of the timesheets.

Fadli responded to the increased pressure when clocked 1:30.794 on his seventh lap out on track.  With only two minutes left on the clock, it seemed likely that Fadli would earn his first pole position in the SuperSports 600cc class. However, the Indonesian rider found himself relegated to third fastest when a final charge by Azlan Shah and Zamri Baba put them on top of the list.

Azlan broke his own lap record of 01:30.527 (2012), replacing it with a new 01:30.383s at the very last seconds of the qualifying session. Zamri Baba also made it to the front row with the second fastest time of qualifying with 01:30.623s.

"We struggled a lot with the setting because the track was half wet and half dry. I spent a lot of time going in and out of the pit. Finally, when I knew that it was my last lap out on track, I decided to forget all about posting time and just went flat out. In fact, I was surprised to learn that I had broken my own lap record," said Azlan.

This will be Azlan's second pole position at the Sentul International Circuit and will give the Malaysian rider a slight advantage over Katsuaki Fujiwara who will be parking his bike on P4 after clocking 1:30.912s. After Round 1, both riders are tied at the number 1 spot.

Ahmad Fuad Baharudin and Makoto Tamada will join Fujiwara on the second row, followed by Dimas Ekky Pratama, HA Yudhistira and Ryuta Kobayashi on Row 3. Ryuta Kobayashi takes up the final spot within the top-10.

Idemitsu Honda Team Asia establishes riding school

Idemitsu Honda Team Asia has relocated to France and, in doing so, launched a collaboration with CIP in order to create a riding school dedicated to Asian riders.

On Monday, the Moto2™ outfit staged a presentation at Alès Pôle Mécanique in France - the country in which the team has been located since March of this year. The new riding school will be overseen by former Grand Prix rider and team manager Tady Okada.
‘The idea is to create a riding school dedicated to Asian riders,’ the squad explains via an official press release. ‘This school should allow the riders to come to Europe and help them to develop the necessary skills to become Grand Prix riders.’
At the end of the presentation, Idemitsu’s Yuki Takahashi and was joined by CIP Moto3 rider Alan Techer for an on-track display.

AZLAN, FUJIWARA TIED AS LEADERS

Round 1 of the 2013 PETRONAS Asia Road Racing Championship got off to an amazing start with intense battles up and down the grid in all race classes. In the SuperSports 600cc class, MUSASHi Boon Siew Honda's Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman squared off against BEET Kawasaki's Katsuaki Fujiwara in both races, but both ended the day back on square one.
Fujiwara got off to a great start in Race 1 but could not prevent Azlan from diving in on the inside to steal the hole shot and Ryuta Kobayashi's unexpected outside line attack that put him on P2. Stuck in P3 temporarily, Fujiwara lost no time in putting Kobayashi in his place but Azlan continued to lead for the next four laps. On Lap 5, Fujiwara successfully took over P1, followed by Azlan and Zamri while Kobayashi and Makoto Tamada formed a two-man second group. All five riders were consistently lapping within the low 1:06s band, none were able to break away.

More dicing ensued before Azlan blows past Fujiwara to take the lead on Lap 17. As always, the Kawasaki had the front straight advantage but the Honda was smoother at the corners. Fujiwara was not about to back down but Azlan cooly continues to control the race pace, ignoring a persistent Fujiwara at his back. At Turn 1 in the final lap, the aggressive Azlan and Fujiwara came close to contact point before Fujiwara finally backed down.

The 25 lap-race ended with Azlan becoming the first Malaysian to win a SuperSports 600cc race in Sepang with a time of 27:41.697s. Fujiwara had to be contented in second place, lagging by 1.009s. PETRONAS Hong Leong Yamaha's Mohd Zamri Baba completed a solo race in third place with 27:44.006s.

Race 2 took place in 'cooler' conditions, with track temperature only reaching 35 degrees Celcius. But the competition hotted up as soon as the 600cc riders got out on grid. This time, Fujiwara stole the hole shot, but lost the lead immediately to a charging Azlan. On Lap 5, Zamri managed to slot himself between Fujiwara and Azlan but lost the position almost immediately when Fujiwara responded in kind.

Throughout the nine proceeding laps, it was Azlan vs Fujiwara and Zamri vs Makoto Tamada every step of the way until Zamri started indicating that he was facing an attack by the mechanical gremlins. The Malaysian rider was forced to retire on Lap 17, and from that point onwards, Makoto Tamada just had to pace steadily in third place. Up front, the Fujiwara/Azlan battle intensified. Already racing on worn tyres and sliding all over the track, Azlan still took the battle to Fujiwara, with both riders brushing up against each other at every turn.

At the chequered flag, it was Fujiwara who sped ahead with a 0.065s gap, winning the second race with a total time of 27:40.417s. Azlan finished second with 27:40.482s. Third-placed Tamada stopped the clock at 27:46.399s.

"Both races were equally tough and we seemed to have a tough time getting the right settings for this round. It was only in Race 2 that the bike really felt comfortable to me. Indonesia will be an important round for everyone and I guess we will just have to do this all over again in three weeks time," shrugged Fujiwara.

Both riders are now tied in the lead with 45 points apiece. Tamada who finished fifth in Race 1 and third in Race 2 is third overall with 27 points followed by Ryuta Kobayashi ranked fourth with 26 points and Tomoyoshi Koyama fifth with 20 points.

Round 2 will take place at the Sentul International Circuit from May 17 to 19, 2013.
