Moto3: Zulfahmi Khairuddin - Q&A
A Red Bull KTM Ajo generated interview with Malaysian Moto3 star Zulfahmi Khairuddin...
Q:
Do you like the travel involved in Grand Prix racing? Do you get a chance to familiarise yourself with the places you go to?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"The truth is that during the season we don't have much time to get away. At most you have a day to see the city where a GP is held sometimes, but that's not the norm. You get used to spending all day at the circuit. It is a pity, because I really like to visit new countries, try their typical food and meet people from around the world."

Q:
You spent a year in Europe in 2010. What was that experience like and why did you choose to go back to Malaysia?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"The experience of 2010, living in Italy, was very good and important for me. It was my first year in Europe and I didn't know many people, nor was I familiar with the food - very important! - or the weather. It was a little difficult, especially during the first three months, because I was not used to everything around me.
“I especially struggled with the cold and the food. After the first few months I got used to it and finally I felt good and learned a lot from the people around me.
“For the past two years I have lived in Malaysia. It's better for me to live there because I like to go home, to see my family and my friends. Moreover, the weather in Malaysia is always good. As is normal, I guess, there is nowhere else where I feel so comfortable."
Q:
And if you had to spend time away from Malaysia, where would you like to go?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"In Barcelona, which is a city that I like a lot. Many of my team members live there and I love it."
Q:
Many of your team members are Spanish and a big part of your preseason is spent in Spain. What do you like about the country?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"The beach, the city [Barcelona], the people... This country has many good circuits and racing is very popular here."
Q:
Is it true that you can sleep very easily on things like plane journeys?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"It's true; I have the ability to sleep anytime, anywhere. I need only five minutes to fall asleep! Last year, noticing this, the team gave me a cushion!"
Q:
More and more Malaysians are becoming MotoGP fans every year. Do you think we will see more Malaysian riders in the World Championship in the future?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"I hope so, but it is difficult to find riders who can make the leap up, because there is so much talent at World Championship level. Nevertheless, I think that the Sepang Circuit and the people involved there are doing a very good job. In my country there are some very talented riders."
Q:
Last year you took your first podium at Sepang. What do you remember about that?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"It was a Grand Prix that I will never forget: My first podium in Moto3! I felt bad about not being able to win in front of all the fans, but the experience helped and next time I will shut the door tighter on the last corner."
Q:
Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"I don't know; for me to be in the World Championship is already a dream come true. Few riders know what they will be doing in five years' time. I would like to be able to one day ride in MotoGP. It is very difficult but I will work hard for it."
Q:
Final question: If you weren't a rider, what would you have liked to have been?
Zulfahmi Khairuddin:
"Something to do with bikes, as I love this world. So I would have liked to be a mechanic or engineer."

Viñales quickest in Mugello test session
Following a single day of post-race Mugello testing for Moto2™, it was the turn of the Moto3™ field on Tuesday as championship leader Maverick Viñales led the way.
The positive news in the morning was sunshine at the picturesque Tuscan venue, after the previous day had brought several rainstorms. Tuesday would not be all-dry either, as a shower did come at 2pm, although the race track soon dried out.
Both Viñales’ Team Calvo outfit and Estrella Galicia 0,0 - both running KTM machinery - concentrated on bike setup as Red Bull KTM Ajo divided the workload amongst its riders; Luis Salom and Zulfahmi Khairuddin carried out back-to-back comparisons between the current chassis and an updated version, also delving into suspension settings and various engine maps. Also on an Austrian-made KTM bike, Avant Tecno’s Niklas Ajo focussed primarily on the geometry of his frame.
At Mahindra Racing, the team remained on a high after Miguel Oliveira had achieved the outfit’s best ever fourth place finish in the race 48 hours earlier. Today’s plan featured a raft of components ranging from aerodynamic upgrades to the frame and engine to suspension. Oliveira’s injured teammate Efren Vazquez remained on the sidelines and was covered for by Italian Michael Rinaldi.
GO&FUN Gresini Moto3 concentrated on engine updates, brought by the team itself as opposed to Honda, as team owner Fausto Gresini confirmed that the objective was to find more horsepower. Also powered by Honda but with an FTR chassis, San Carlo Team Italia experimented with a new swingarm. Red flags would fleetingly break up the day, with Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins and La Fonte Tascaracing’s Hyuga Watanabe (assessing chassis enhancements) amongst the fallers; the latter was momentarily knocked unconscious and taken to hospital for check-ups, but was allowed to leave in the evening and is expected to be fit to take part in the next race.
Some in the paddock were surprised to see Belgian rookie Livio Loi, who had not been set to run but elected to look into setup changes on his Marc VDS Racing Team bike in a bid to improve confidence levels after a difficult race on Sunday. CIP Moto3’s Juanfran Guevara - testing new rear shock absorbers and electronics - suffered a pair of crashes within four hours of each other, whereas frame geometry was top priority for Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger and Eric Granado.
On the timesheets, Folger and Viñales traded top times for much of the test (running from 9am-6pm local time, GMT+2) until the latter posted his final leading best of 1’57.889 in the penultimate hour.

Mugello: What a difference a year makes
Things never stay the same for long in motor racing. It is true that the first four races may not have been the same as those in 2012 (with Portugal’s Estoril track having been replaced by the United States’ Circuit of the Americas), although it is without a doubt that Repsol Honda Team has started off on a stronger footing.
In 2012, Lorenzo won two of the first quartet of Grands Prix by triumphing in Rounds 1 and 4. This sandwiched a pair of victories for outgoing champion Casey Stoner, whereas the best Pedrosa had to offer was a single second place, a pair of thirds and one fourth. This time, the Sabadell man had his fourth position in the opening round before going on to finish second in Texas before taking back-to-back wins.
Marquez would appear to be unstoppable. The current Moto2™ champion is yet to finish off the rostrum in what is the most successful debutant appearance ever. He could be forgiven for not yet knowing the protocol, should he finish outside the top three at Mugello this weekend. That said, he did finish ‘only’ fifth there last year, but had already triumphed 12 months earlier.
Arguably, Italy’s race must be the one at which Yamaha steps up to the challenge. Lorenzo heads to scenic Tuscany with only 73% of the points he held this time last year, whereas Pedrosa has improved by 22% in comparison with four races into 2012. Bearing in mind #26 claimed six of the final eight victories last season and lost a seventh through no fault of his own, a selection of insiders believe the Honda should be just as potent - if not more so - at the same venues this season.
Lorenzo’s position can work both to his advantage and against him. Based on the form book so far this campaign, the two-time premier class champion is the quicker Yamaha factory rider and is up against a pair of Hondas. This clearly worked against him in Jerez, battling and eventually losing out to Marquez as Pedrosa sailed off into the distance for his first win of the year. On the other hand, come the end of the year, Honda could regret its riders taking points off each other whereas Lorenzo could be assisted by Valentino Rossi should the Italian find himself too far adrift.
For the above reason, it is paramount from Rossi’s point of view that the nine-time champion and seven-time premier class winner ups his own game in order to stay on par with Lorenzo and attack the Honda duo together. What better place to do that than at home in Italy? He is yet to win or even appear on the podium at Mugello since 2008, not helped by his leg-breaking accident three years ago. One must not forget Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow, though, who despite a leg fracture of his own fought to a career-best result of second last time out at Le Mans.
Last year’s Gran Premio d’Italia TIM served as the ninth race in the season, as opposed to its 2013 position as Round 5. You can be sure, however, that such a fact would not discourage Jorge Lorenzo from repeating his victory as MotoGP™ returns to Mugello.

Historic victory by Maria Herrera in Moto3. Ramos and Raffin dominate in Moto2; Morales wins in Stock Extreme
Sun and fine temperatures welcomed the hundred or so riders who gathered for the second race day of the CEV Repsol season. Eight thousand fans have enjoyed a long day’s racing at the world class track in Alcañiz.
In Moto3™, Maria Herrera (SPA-KTM) dominated and achieved her first win in the CEV Repsol - the first ever female rider to reach the top step of the podium in the championship. Worthy second and third places went to Jorge Navarro (SPA-Mir Racing) and Alejandro Medina (SPA-KTM), who opened up a considerable gap over the rest of the pack and fought tooth and nail with each other to try to catch the eventual winner. There was a solid performance also from Marcos Ramírez (SPA-KTM) of Junior Team Estrella Galicia 0.0 who was part of the leading group. Pole position starter Adrián Martín (SPA-Kalex-KTM) saw his chances vanish when he hit the deck on the eleventh lap.
There were two Moto2™ races today. Román Ramos (SPA-Ariane) was the clear winner of the first race with a lead of 16 seconds over second place rider Hafizh Syahrin, who nabbed his first podium of the season. Third place went to Noyes (USA-Suter) who declared himself more satisfied with the set-up of his bike. Raffin – pole position man - and Rivas - third on the grid – were involved in a fall without serious consequences, but which forced them from the race. The winner of the Spanish Superstock 600 Cup was Miquel Pons (SPA-Yamaha). The second Moto2 race took place without falls but with plenty of surprises. It looked as if Román Ramos (SPA-Ariane) was set to repeat his earlier victory, but a few metres from the end pole position man Jesko Raffin (SWI-Kalex) moved past, relegating him to second place. The Swiss rider not only claimed victory but also set the fastest lap of the race of 1:55.664. Alexander Mariñelarena did the same thing, taking an almost certain third place from Hafizh Syahrin (MAL-Kalex). Best Superstock 600 rider was once again Miquel Pons (SPA-Yamaha).
The Stock Extreme race was also full of surprises. Iván Silva (SPA-BMW Motorrad) crashed out three laps from the end after leading comfortably lap after lap. Current champion Carmelo Morales (SPA-Kawasaki) and runner-up Xavi Forés (SPA-Ducati Pompone) moved up and then fought a bitter duel all the way to the chequered flag. Antonio Alarcos (SPA-Kawasaki) took third place, celebrating his first podium as a non-privateer rider. First place in the Spanish privateer cup was secured by Jon Purroy (SPA-BMW Motorrad), after Andreas Martensson (SWE-Honda) was disqualified for technical reasons.
The next round of the CEV Repsol will take place at Albacete on 22 and 23 June, where the third round of the championship will be held.
